AS AUSTRALIANS, WHAT MAKES US LAUGH? As Australians, we laugh at self mockery and 'taking the mickey out of ourselves.' We enjoy jokes that we can relate to, generalisations of characteristics of communities, and issues that we face. Australians also laugh when things are ironic and scarcastic. As stated by actor Hugh Bonneville in a recents feature article in the green guide, refering to a comedy show, 'It excelled because of the honesty of its situation and characters.' To make good Australian humour, you have to base it on realism, on something that we as Australians can relate to. In another article by Peter Munro, this description of what makes Australians laugh is again stated, refering to the success of Kath and Kim. 'I think the characters are just so bizzare but so completly related to characters we all know.' Munro commented. Sue Turnball from La Trobe University quoted 'The role of comedy in Australia is precisely to hold up a mirror to society or culture.' This sums up what really makes Australians laugh, as the laughs are on us, just the way we like it. |
